tracks 8 & 9 are the tape sides in entirety as to avoid the discontinuity of individual track play on this portal. The individual tracks include short fades to eliminate annoying pops. any other annoying pops are purely intentional.

Originally I was calling our output Music Without A Film and I am returning to that organizing principle more and more, bringing back at least the SOUND of what the project name has always signified for me: long form immersion into dark internal psychological soundtracks, encompassing and PLAYING with events in large spaces, loops, shortwaves, ominous synthesizer waves, controlled feedback, traditional instruments used in unconventional ways, and undefinable cryptic voices. The emphasis on play I like to stress because its always been present despite my serious nature, these sounds, words, & ideas are fun to play with.
Frontal is a continuation of the push to earlier methods and actually includes many old recordings, all previously unreleased, some from 1983, and the ensemble piece from a live performance in 1989. As well as very recent recording completed in March 2023.
Mitch Enderle (Dead Tech) and I started working together in 1981 post TG influence. He was a core member of IOS for the first decade and we had performed on the experimental stage at Willyfest in Madison WI in 1988. For the next year I enlisted Thymme Jones (CHEER-ACCIDENT) & Jim O’Rourke (Sonic Youth, Gastr del sol, Brise-Glace) to join Mitch and I at Willyfest. We did not know that they had relocated the experimental stage to the center of the street just in front of a biker bar, and the guys didn’t know I had taken mushrooms. Those bikers where not digging the odd noises coming from the experimental stage that day, but they did however perk up and smile when I cathartically started bashing on the plastic refrigerator parts we had collected in the alley with a baseball bat. The group of kids jeering at us against the stage took off running. Good times.

Since 1983, Burke and his many conspirators under the IOS banner have over the course of 40+ releases traversed most every
facet of the avant sound plane, from early industrial pop deconstruction to blindingly minimal sound art to densely surreal found-sound collage, creating uneasy music that is dense and dystopian and yet also beautiful....more
razed abandon is what i love about this project, no holds barred all out frontal delivery of the feelings at hand, no filter, real freedom of expression. blistering and detailed Illusion of Safety
like a trip to another world somewhat opaque in nature, like a cloud surrounding your field of sound and vision, clarity is almost attainable and you float in obtuse syrupy gel Illusion of Safety
fascinating blend of who the fuck knows what! and i mean that in the best possible way. reminds a bit of one of my favorites The Hafler Trio, unknown sounds put together in a concise narrative Illusion of Safety
Less a solo act than a one-man megalith, Khôra builds impressive experimental soundscapes from modular synths, flutes, harps, and more. Bandcamp New & Notable Feb 19, 2020
